What does the Student Effort fund?

Most students will find that only a small amount of billed expenses (tuition, room, board) is paid with funds earned through the Student Effort. Students use most of their Student Effort to cover unbilled expenses associated with being a full-time student, including course books and personal expenses like laundry. Yale’s 2018–2019 Estimated Cost of Attendance includes an estimate of $3,750 for books and personal expenses. The total Student Effort is $4,450 for first-year students and $5,950 for upper-level students.
